Abscission probability varies among floral positions within inflorescences of Vicia faba L. Flowers from proximal positions have a greater chance to develop into mature pods than flowers from more distal positions which normally abscise either as older flowers or as young pods. In three field experiments with the indeterminate single stem variety Herz-Freya, changes in the contents of extractable auxins, abscisic acid (ABA) and gibberellins in flowers and pods during their development, and their possible influence on abscission were investigated.Inflorescences at different positions along the stem were divided into the two proximal and the remaining fruits. The content of all three hormones was at a low level during flower development, increased greatly in parallel with dry matter accumulation in the young pods, and then decreased to maturity. The first hormone to increase in the fruits was auxin and this took place when abscission from the distal positions began. ABA and gibberellins at this time were still at a low level. This ontogenic course of hormone production was very similar in fruits of both positions within an inflorescence, but in flowers and young pods from proximal positions, auxin content in most inflorescences was greater than in those from the abscising distal positions. No such positional differences were observed with ABA and gibberellins. Decapitation of the plants reduced flower and pod drop from the remaining reproductive nodes. Although decapitation resulted in less abscission among distal flowers and young pods from these nodes, it did not affect the ontogenic course of auxin and ABA production in these fruits.  相似文献

Cortisol values were obtained from 39 ferrets, Mustela putorius furo, by using a commercial radioimmunoassay. Sera from 25 males (18 intact, 7 neutered) and 14 females (7 intact, 7 spayed) were assayed. Resting serum cortisol values ranged from 0.13 to 2.70 micrograms/dl for males (mean = 0.93 +/- 0.63 micrograms/dl), and 0.55 to 1.84 micrograms/dl for females (mean = 0.86 +/- 0.29 microgram/dl). The resting cortisol values of both males and females were comparable to those of the cat (1.0 to 3.0 micrograms/dl). A 7 year old male ferret with suspected hyperadrenocorticism and an adrenal mass had a cortisol level of 8.1 micrograms/dl. Adrenal cortical carcinoma was the histologic diagnosis. One adult female ferret had a cortisol level of 3.30 micrograms/dl. This animal also had proliferative colitis upon necropsy. An ACTH stimulation test (1 U/kg IM) and a low-dose dexamethasone suppression test (0.1 mg/kg) were performed on 10 ferrets. Post-ACTH serum cortisol levels increased by an average of 89%. Post-dexamethasone serum cortisol values decreased by an average of 18% 6 hours post-injection.  相似文献

Proliferative colitis in the ferret consistently displays, along with marked proliferation of mucosal cells, intracytoplasmic campylobacter-like organisms within the apical portion of the epithelial cells. Fluorescent antibody to "omega" campylobacter antigen present in porcine intestinal adenomatosis and hamster proliferative ileitis was demonstrated at the site of bacterial colonization within hyperplastic epithelial cells of six colons from ferrets affected with proliferative colitis.  相似文献

Identification of potentially embryogenic microspores in Brassica napus   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Studies were undertaken with Brassica napus L. cv. Topas to identify buds containing microspores predisposed to embryogenesis in vitro and to investigate bud and microspore development in relation to this process. No significant correlation was found between the final embryo number and bud components. There appears to be a developmental window of less than 8 h duration during which microspores are very likely to form embryos: over 70% of the microspores can undergo division and up to 70% of these can form embryos. Embryos were mainly obtained from late uninuucleate to early binucleate microspores: the former contained mainly a G2 or M phase nucleus located at the microspore periphery and the latter a generative nucleus (associated with the intine) and a vegetative nucleus. Observations indicated that only the vegetative nucleus contributed to embryo formation. The first embryogenic division occurred between 8 and 16 h for uninucleate- and between 8 and 48 h for binucleate-derived embryos.  相似文献

Histomorphometric and biomechanical changes in bone resulting from hypogravity (simulated weightlessness) were examined in this study. Using a head-down hindlimb suspension model, three groups of six male rats underwent simulated weightlessness for periods of one, two and three weeks while a fourth recovery group was suspended for two weeks followed by two weeks of normal activity. Biomechanical data were collected during static and dynamic bending and torsion tests on intact femora. Histomorphometric values were determined from midshaft bone cross sections and material properties were obtained using ash and calcium assays. The experimental groups exhibited significantly lower geometric and material properties than the controls, resulting in structural hypotrophy; geometric and material changes contributed equally to the structural changes. Recovery following a return to normal activity was indicated, although full recovery may take longer than the weightlessness period. In the rat, altered maturation and reduced bone strength were the sequelae of weightlessness.  相似文献

We used single-breath mechanical loads and airway occlusions in premature infants to determine whether maturation influences the reflex control of inspiratory duration. We measured flow, volume, airway pressure, and surface diaphragmatic electromyogram (EMG) in 10 healthy preterm infants [33 +/- 1 (SD) wk gestation], 2-7 days of age. Three resistive and two elastic loads and occlusions were applied to the inspiratory outlet of a two-way respiratory valve. Application of all loads resulted in inspired volumes significantly decreased from control (P less than 0.001), and these decreases were progressive with increasing loads. Inspiratory duration (TI) was prolonged from control by all loads and occlusions when measured from the diaphragmatic EMG (neural TI) and by all but the smaller elastic load when measured from the flow tracing (mechanical TI). Similar decreases in inspired volume at the end of neural TI produced by application of both elastic and resistive loads resulted in comparable prolongation of neural TI. In contrast, for comparable volume decrements, resistive loading prolonged mechanical TI more than elastic loading (P less than 0.001). Mechanical and neural TI values of the breath after the loaded breath were unchanged from control values. Comparison of the neural volume-timing relationship in premature infants with our data in full-term infants suggests that the strength of the timing response to similar relative decrements in inspired volume is comparable. We conclude that reflex control of neural TI in premature infants depends on the magnitude of inspired volume and is independent of the volume trajectory.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A Halobacterium strain, isolated by Ginzburg et al. from the Dead Sea in the late 1960's, often referred to as "Halobacterium marismortui" or "Halobacterium of the Dead Sea" (deposited in the American Type Culture Collection as ATCC 43049) was compared with Halobacterium (Haloarcula) vallismortis ATCC 29715. The strains appeared to be very closely related, as shown by the near identity of their 5S and 16S ribosomal RNA's, and a large number of other common properties. Distinct differences exist, however, in cell morphology, and in their potency to utilize different sugars and other compounds.  相似文献

Sixty four patients were referred for cardiac transplantation from a single cardiac team at this hospital between October 1984 and December 1986. Of these patients, 33 were referred for urgent transplantation, all of whom required intensive treatment in hospital with intravenous infusions of cardiac drugs, intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation, peritoneal dialysis, ventilation, or any combination of these to sustain life. Of these 33 patients, six died while awaiting transplantation, one was removed from the waiting list for a transplant, and 26 received cardiac transplants. There were five deaths within 24 hours of operation and one death 10 days after the operation. Twenty of those who had surgery had a successful outcome of transplantation, but there was one late death 10 weeks postoperatively and a further death 31 months after surgery. Eighteen patients were alive and well 10 to 33 months (mean 19·4 months) after transplantation, with an overall survival rate after surgery of 69%.Provided that surgery can be performed before renal failure has progressed such that renal transplantation is necessary, the results are excellent (surgical survival 85·5%) and, we believe, justify the expenditure and staffing requirements necessary to treat these terminally ill patients.  相似文献

Summary Much of life history theory follows from the idea that natural selection acts on the allocation of resources to competing and independent demographic functions. This paradigm has stimulated much research on the life histories of annual plants. Models of whole-plant resource budgets that use optimal control theory predict periods of 100% vegetative and 100% reproductive growth, sometimes with periods of mixed growth. I show here that this prediction follows from the assumption of independence of the competing vegetative and reproductive compartments. The prediction is qualitatively unchanged even after relaxing important simplifying assumptions used in most models. Although it follows naturally from the assumptions of the models, this kind of allocation pattern is unlikely to occur in many plants, because it requires that (1) leaf and flower buds can never simultaneously be carbon sinks; and (2) organs that accompany flowers, such as internodes and bracts, can never be net sources of photosynthate. Thus while resources are doubtless important for annual plants, an exclusively resource-based perspective may be inadequate to understand the evolution of their life histories. Progress in research may require models that incorporate, or are at least phenomenologically consistent with, the basic developmental reles of angiosperms.  相似文献
